Kefalonia: our top five recommendations

Kefalonia is the largest and (probably) the most beautiful of the Ionian islands. Scenic beaches, great food and picture-perfect houses – here’s our top five things to do on this amazing greek island:

1. Explore Melissani Lake

This hidden gem is a must visit on a stay in Kefalonia. Upon arrival, all looks rather strange, but don’t be concerned. Your ticket takes you down a tunnel which emerges at a lake which is sunken into a roofless cave. Your boat guide will take you for a tour of the cave and take your photos for you (expect to tip regardless).

2. Catch some rays on Myrtos Beach

Myrtos Beach is unique for one simple reason, it looks best not when you’re on it, but before you arrive. Catch it from one of the viewpoints looking down where the white beach meets the clear waters of the Ionian Sea.

3. Admire the beauty of Assos

Assos is a picture-perfect village. It’s multicoloured houses lead you down to an array of cafes and views up to the castle on the adjacent hill. Perfect for instagrammers, you’re guaranteed to get some great pops of colour to add to your feed.

4. Drive up into the mountains

Hire a car (which you need to get around Kefalonia anyway) and head up into the mountains. The mountain roads between Argostoli and Assos give you breathtaking views, but be warned, the roads are narrow and winding – and goats do like to block your way.

5. Spend the evening on Argostoli waterfront

Restaurants line the harbour front promenade in Argostoli, a peaceful setting for some local seafood or some Kefalonia meat pie. Wander along harbour front with sea turtles often greeting visitors, but if you take a boat tour into the bay you may just glimpse dolphins.
